There’s been a lot of speculation since Baby Archie’s summer christening, but now we know the names of two of his godparents!
Amidst all the news of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepping away from their royal duties, we’ve gotten some news concerning Baby Archie Harrison’s christening: Two of his godparents have been revealed!
After the private christening back in July 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex opted not to reveal the names of their son’s godparents, which obviously led to a lot of speculation as to who they could be.
There were rumours that Canadian stylist and TV personality Jessica Mulroney was the best bet to be Archie’s godmother—she is Meghan’s BFF after all, and we know how strong Meghan’s connections to Canada are. However, according to a report from Hello!, Jessica may not have made the cut.
Instead, the Sussexes chose two Brits to fill the roles of godparents. The first is Prince Harry’s childhood nanny, Tiggy Pettifer (formerly Tiggy Legge-Bourke), and the second is ex-royal aide and Harry’s close friend, Mark Dyer.
Good news for baby Archie—he’ll now have a shot at a normal lifeWhile many Canadians may have been hoping for a Godmother Jessica, it’s no surprise that Tiggy got the job instead. She became Prince William and Prince Harry’s nanny during the time when Prince Charles and Princess Diana were separating, and provided emotional support for the young princes at a rocky stage in their lives. And when Princess Diana died in 1997, Tiggy was the one who looked after Harry and became a maternal figure to him, so it only makes sense that he’d trust her to care for Archie in the same way.
Similarly, Mark Dyer, who served as an equerry (officer of the household) to Prince Charles in the 90s, became a mentor to the two princes after Princess Diana died. He is also a trustee of the charity Sentebale, which Prince Harry co-founded in 2006. It was at a fundraiser for Sentebale that Harry recently made his first speech commenting on his and Meghan’s decision to step down as working members of the royal family. As trustee to the charity, and a friend of Harry’s, Mark was there in attendance as Harry explained that “the decision that I have made for my wife and I to step back, is not one I made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And I know I haven’t always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there really was no other option.”
Even though Jessica may not have been named as a godparent, she’ll likely still play a large role in Archie’s life as the Sussexes begin to put down roots in Canada.
